Academic

Oliver House School’s curriculum is based on an educational philosophy which leads to the development of true freedom.

As you know, the task of a teacher is not simply to impart information or to provide training in skills intended to deliver some economic benefit to society; education is not and must never be considered as purely utilitarian. It is about forming the human person, equipping him or her to live life to the full – in short it is about imparting wisdom.

Pre-Prep Department

In the Pre-Prep Department the class teacher takes all core curriculum subjects with specialist teachers taking Spanish and Physical Education. English and Maths have a central place in the timetable but children also have classes in; History, Geography, Religious Education, Science, Art, ICT, Character Development and Drama.
We encourage a problem-solving approach and a keen awareness of the natural world. The children go on many excursions and benefit from outside speakers and visitors. Information technology is integrated into all subjects. With small class sizes we are able to offer an individualised teaching programme with differentiated activities. Each child continues at their own pace, the more able being challenged and some additional support for those who need this to ensure that they do not fall behind.
By the end of their time in the Pre-Prep Department children will have received a thorough educational grounding and be well prepared to meet the challenges of the Prep Department.

Prep Department

Children aged 7-11 have a class teacher who takes the majority of the core subjects with specialist teachers for Science, Spanish, Religious Education and Physical Education. The curriculum consists of; English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Spanish, Latin (Year 5 & 6), Religious Education, Character Development, ICT, Art, Music, Drama
We encourage a problem-solving approach and aim to teach children how they learn and encourage them to develop strategies for thinking that really work for them thus developing their intellectual character.
The academic work inevitably becomes more demanding as the children progress to the final preparations for Scholarship and Entrance examinations to secondary school. This is a gradual process for which the children are well prepared in the studious atmosphere of their own Prep building. Children use the facilities of a library and ICT room to carry out any research they need to do.
Our commitment, following our close partnership with parents, is to prepare children for the challenges they will face in their secondary education.
